Meet Blue Crew Volunteer Davetta Taylor

Davetta Taylor, Senior care management assistant
Years at Independence Blue Cross: 17

How did you become a Blue Crew volunteer?

I learned about the Blue Crew volunteer program watching the slideshow that was presented at my 10th anniversary luncheon and have been an active volunteer since.

What organizations and/or service projects do you support with the Blue Crew?

I have volunteered with the Ronald McDonald House, United Way, Fred’s Footsteps, Cozen PAL events, UNCF Mayor’s Masked Ball, National Walk @ Lunch Day, Back on My Feet, MLK Day of Service, Red Heart Ball, and many other community service opportunities.

How do you think the Blue Crew impacts the corporate culture at Independence?

When I first started with the company, I would just come to work, do what was required, and leave. But after I was introduced to the Blue Crew, I’ve learned so much more about the company and how it serves the community, and the experience has [helped] me to meet and mingle with so many people within and outside of Independence.

What motivates you to donate so many volunteer hours?

The mere aspect of helping those in need inspires me.

Is there a particular volunteer project or achievement you are most proud of?

The Ronald McDonald House and Cozen PAL events are the nearest and dearest to me. To see the smiles of the parents at the Ronald McDonald House and the thanks [they give us] for a home-cooked meal is an amazing feeling. They are so grateful for such a small gesture. The Cozen PAL Prom Boutique — when you help the young ladies find a dress for the prom, they try it on, and their whole face lights up — the feeling is contagious.

When you aren’t at work or volunteering, how do you like to spend your free time?

I divide my time as an active cheer/dance mom, and I spend as much time as I can with my book club girls, The Reading Divas.

Our Independence Blue Cross (Independence) Corporate Volunteer Program — the Blue Crew — celebrates its 15th anniversary in 2016. Collectively, our Blue Crew volunteers donated more than 7,900 community service hours in 2015. In this series, we’re profiling our Blue Crew volunteers with the most individual service hours. My personal philosophy about health and well-being is to have simple goals and stick to them — whether it’s drinking more water, working in a few extra steps each day, or just making time to unplug. When I’m not busy writing creative content for a variety of audiences, my favorite ways to unwind include enjoying local arts and culture, reading a good book, and watching TV cooking shows.
